痛定思痛 [tòng dìng sī tòng]
1. recall past pain -- as a warning for the future; bring home the lessons painfully learned; draw a lesson from a bitter experience; recall a painful experience; recall the past with pangs in the heart; reflect [ponder] sufferings and pains after they are gone; take one's painful experience to heart; think over the reason after this bitter lesson创痛平复或悲痛的心情平静之后，回想当时所遭受的痛苦。含有吸取教训，警惕未来的意思。语出唐韩愈《与李翱书》：“仆在京城八九年，无所取资，日求于人，以度时月，当时行之不觉也。今而思之，如痛定之人，思当痛之时，不知何能自处也。”
