晋 杜预 《春秋经传集解序》：“其发凡以言例，皆经国之常制， 周公 之垂法，史书之旧章。”又《左传·隐公七年》“凡诸侯同盟，於是称名，故薨则赴以名，告终称嗣也，以继好息民，谓之礼经” 杜预 注：“此言凡例，乃 周公 所制礼经也。”后因以“凡例”指体制、章法或内容大要，今多指书前说明本书内容或编纂体例的文字。
唐 杜甫 《八哀诗·赠秘书监江夏李公邕》诗：“各满深望还，森然起凡例。” 仇兆鳌 注：“森然起例，谓碑文体製。”《朱子语类》卷六六：“ 夫子 作传，亦略举一端以见凡例而已。” 元 刘壎 《隐居通议·礼乐》：“古人题旐及题墓必加国号，如曰‘ 唐 故’、‘ 宋 故’，所以表其为何代之人……此其凡例也。” 清 周中孚 《郑堂札记》卷二：“自序门当属叙述编譔体例及序，于卷首无自序凡例知之。”如：关于这部手册的编写体例，我们已经在“凡例”中作了说明。
